Job Description

The Controls & Commissioning Engineer role is a hands-on technical position designed for professionals who specialize in software development, system integration, and commissioning within automated warehousing or logistics environments. This opportunity offers contract-based employment on multiple projects across the United Kingdom, starting in January 2026, with immediate openings in key industrial cities including Oxford, Hull, Birmingham, Leicester, and Daventry.

As a Controls & Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for configuring, testing, and commissioning automation systems, ensuring they perform seamlessly according to design specifications. The projects are part of large-scale logistics operations that require synchronized automation between conveyors, robotic arms, sensors, and control networks. Your role will involve integrating hardware and software, troubleshooting real-time system behavior, and ensuring that every operational sequence runs efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, configure, and modify PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal to ensure correct system functionality.
  • Perform commissioning activities including I/O testing, hardware validation, and system troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—mechanical, electrical, and software engineers—to coordinate installation and start-up procedures.
  • Monitor real-time operations and adjust parameters to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Ensure all control systems adhere to safety and compliance standards established by project guidelines.
  • Execute testing and validation protocols to confirm successful automation integration before handover.
  • Document software changes, wiring updates, and commissioning reports in accordance with client requirements.
  • Provide on-site technical support during installation, testing, and final acceptance phases.
  • Support project managers in scheduling commissioning timelines and resolving technical bottlenecks.
  • Conduct risk assessments for automation systems to identify and mitigate potential issues during operations.

Work Environment and Nature of Work:

Engineers will work on rotation-based schedules with both day and night shifts available. Projects are fast-paced and require hands-on interaction with automation systems in large distribution centers and warehouses. Flexibility, problem-solving aptitude, and technical precision are critical for this role.

The Controls & Commissioning Engineer will often be the first point of contact for troubleshooting issues during live commissioning. You’ll need to apply both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to ensure every automated element—from PLCs to motion control devices—functions reliably. The role also demands collaboration with vendors, contractors, and client representatives to align commissioning progress with project milestones.

This opportunity provides exposure to some of the most advanced logistics automation technologies currently used across Europe. You’ll work on high-end systems powered by Siemens TIA Portal, SCADA visualization, and distributed control networks—all vital to modern logistics infrastructure.

For engineers passionate about automation, robotics, and control systems, this position serves as a stepping stone toward higher-level engineering roles such as Lead Commissioning Engineer, Project Engineer, or Automation Specialist. Every project completed adds not just technical experience but also industry credibility, opening doors to future opportunities in global automation projects.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Controls & Commissioning Engineer position, candidates must meet the following educational, professional, and technical qualifications:

Qualification:

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or Control Systems Engineering. Candidates with vocational certifications and significant industrial experience will also be considered.

Experience:

Applicants should have hands-on experience in automation, controls, or commissioning—particularly in logistics, material handling, or industrial warehousing environments. A minimum of 2–5 years of relevant experience is recommended, though candidates with strong Siemens programming backgrounds may be considered with less experience.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Siemens TIA Portal for PLC programming and system integration.
  • Familiarity with automation control architectures, including safety PLCs, servo drives, and industrial communication networks (Profinet, Ethernet/IP).
  • Ability to troubleshoot automation equipment, sensors, and actuators.
  • Knowledge of robotic interfaces and motion control systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with electrical drawings, control panels, and field installations.
  • Understanding of commissioning processes, system documentation, and validation testing.
  • Experience with on-site installation, start-up support, and end-user training during commissioning handover.

Certifications:

  • IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) certification is required for safe use of powered access equipment.
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card is required to access and work on UK construction or industrial sites.

Soft Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and reporting abilities to collaborate with on-site and remote teams.
  • Flexibility to travel between sites and work rotational shifts, including nights.
  • Self-motivated attitude with the ability to work independently in demanding environments.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to project-specific compliance requirements.

Additional Advantages:

  • Previous experience commissioning automated warehousing systems or conveyor-based operations.
  • Familiarity with robotics, vision systems, or WMS integration (Warehouse Management Systems).
  • Willingness to work extended hours during critical commissioning phases.

NTWRX Recruitment values professionals who demonstrate both technical mastery and operational reliability. Engineers joining these projects will gain exposure to high-performance industrial systems while working alongside experienced automation specialists. The company’s goal is not only to fill project requirements but to build lasting relationships with skilled engineers who can contribute to ongoing and future assignments across the UK and beyond.
