Job Description
Tecno Auto Glass Ltd. is currently seeking applications for the position of Automation Engineer, based at their production facility in Bin Qasim, Karachi. This is a full-time, on-site role that demands a high level of technical expertise, hands-on experience with automation systems, and a practical understanding of field-level industrial components.
The primary function of this role is to ensure the smooth operation, configuration, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance of automation equipment and control systems used across the manufacturing plant. The candidate will be responsible for overseeing the installation and integration of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), SCADA systems, robots, servo motors, and related field devices.
A large portion of the job involves working with well-known PLC brands such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Mitsubishi. The engineer will be expected to write, review, debug, and optimize PLC programs using software environments such as RS Logix 500, RS Logix 5000, and Studio 5000. These systems control various aspects of glass processing equipment, including heating ovens, cutting lines, and autoclave mechanisms.
In addition to working on PLC systems, the candidate must demonstrate strong expertise in C++, Rapid Language, and microcontroller-based applications. These skills are essential for developing custom software logic or managing devices not directly supported by standard industrial controllers.
An integral part of this role also includes supporting robotic systems, particularly those involving Fanuc Controllers. The candidate must understand robotic arm programming, path alignment, and troubleshooting of robotic hardware involved in loading and unloading materials, especially fragile components like glass panels.
The ideal candidate should also be proficient in servo motor control, encoder feedback loops, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), as these are frequently used to control speed, torque, and motion in various production processes. Understanding how to calibrate and troubleshoot these systems will be critical to minimize downtime and ensure product consistency.
Other tasks include collaborating with the electrical team in building, modifying, and troubleshooting electrical panels and PLC cabinets. A basic understanding of electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, and panel wiring is expected.
Moreover, the Automation Engineer will contribute to the design and implementation of HMI and SCADA interfaces, helping production staff visualize and interact with the machines in real-time. This includes creating user-friendly screens, alarms, trends, and diagnostics that support operational efficiency.
The engineer must also maintain comprehensive documentation for every automation project, including wiring schematics, I/O lists, PLC programs, backups, and change logs. Maintaining standardization across all systems is essential to ensure that future modifications are easy to implement.
As part of a cross-functional engineering team, the engineer will also take part in machine commissioning, plant expansions, and integration of new equipment. This may include factory acceptance testing (FAT), on-site commissioning, post-installation support, and collaboration with equipment vendors.
Additionally, the role may require occasional training of plant operators and junior engineers on automation systems, control logic, and basic maintenance routines. The ideal candidate must have good communication skills, both verbal and written, and be comfortable sharing technical knowledge in a clear and structured way.
Being available for on-site troubleshooting during breakdowns or production halts is also part of the responsibilities. Timely diagnosis and resolution of issues are essential to minimize plant downtime and avoid production loss.
In short, this role demands a combination of software development, hardware integration, field diagnostics, and real-time problem-solving in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. It is an opportunity for professionals who have already gained substantial experience in automation and are now looking for a challenging role where they can take ownership of entire systems, influence operational efficiency, and continue their personal and technical growth.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the position of Automation Engineer at Tecno Auto Glass Ltd., candidates must meet a detailed set of academic, professional, and experiential requirements. This is not an entry-level role, and applicants are expected to bring a strong background in electrical or electronics engineering, along with a solid track record in industrial automation.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering, obtained from a recognized and reputable university in Pakistan. Degrees from institutions like NUST, GIKI, UET Lahore, NED University, or equivalent engineering institutes will be preferred due to their rigorous academic standards and industry reputation.
Beyond academic qualifications, the candidate must have a minimum of 6 to 8 years of professional experience in the field of industrial automation. This experience should be hands-on and not limited to classroom or theoretical learning. Candidates who have previously worked in high-volume production environments such as automotive, FMCG, glass manufacturing, or process industries will be considered more suitable for the role.
Experience in PLC programming is essential. Candidates must have demonstrable proficiency in developing and troubleshooting PLC logic using platforms like Allen Bradley (RS Logix 500, 5000), Siemens (TIA Portal, Step 7), or Mitsubishi (GX Works). Having experience with more than one brand will be considered a strong advantage.
In addition to PLCs, candidates must be familiar with microcontroller programming, especially using languages like C++ and Rapid Language. Prior exposure to microcontroller-based project development, either as part of a job or an industrial project, is necessary.
Familiarity with robotics systems, especially Fanuc Controllers, is another essential requirement. Candidates must understand robotic motion control, safety protocols, calibration techniques, and maintenance schedules. Those who have participated in robotic automation integration or programming during plant setups will be prioritized.
A solid understanding of servo motors, encoders, and VFDs is critical. The candidate should have the ability to program and tune motion control devices for different applications, troubleshoot feedback errors, and maintain reliable communication between these devices and the central controller.
Knowledge of HMI and SCADA systems is a must. Candidates must be capable of designing user interfaces, setting up alarm management systems, trend visualizations, and real-time diagnostics. Familiarity with platforms like FactoryTalk View, WinCC, or Wonderware is beneficial.
Applicants must also understand electrical panels, including reading wiring schematics, troubleshooting components, and performing I/O checks. While this role is more software-oriented, a basic command of electrical engineering fundamentals is essential.
Strong troubleshooting skills are critical for this position. The candidate must be able to work under pressure during system failures, identify the root cause, and quickly implement solutions. Prior experience working under shift-based schedules or during machine breakdowns will be appreciated.
Good communication and documentation skills are required. The candidate must be able to prepare technical reports, maintain version histories of PLC and HMI programs, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams including production, maintenance, and quality control.
While not mandatory, any additional certifications in PLC systems, SCADA platforms, or robotic programming will add value to the application. International training or OEM certifications in relevant technologies will also be viewed positively.
Finally, the ideal candidate should demonstrate a proactive attitude, a commitment to continuous learning, and a willingness to share knowledge with others in the team. At Tecno, engineers are expected to contribute beyond their job description by participating in team learning initiatives and process improvement projects.
