Job Description
The Control Systems Engineer at Wymbs Engineering will be at the heart of developing and supporting advanced automation systems for specialized food processing machinery. This role offers a unique combination of responsibilities, requiring both technical expertise and hands-on practical skills. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to every stage of the control systems lifecycle—from concept and design to programming, assembly, testing, and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Control System Design & Development:
The engineer will design, develop, and modify control systems tailored to new and existing machinery. Using software platforms such as Rockwell RSLogix5000, the engineer will create efficient, reliable, and safe control programs. This will include designing for complex applications like depositing systems and motion-controlled equipment. - PLC, HMI & Motion Control Programming:
A major focus of the role involves programming PLCs and developing user-friendly HMIs that allow operators to control machinery intuitively. Motion control expertise will also be vital for systems requiring high precision and synchronization, such as automated depositors and conveyor systems. - Electrical Design:
The engineer will produce detailed electrical schematics using tools like EPlan and AutoCAD. This includes designing control panels, wiring diagrams, and ensuring compliance with international electrical standards. - Panel Building & Assembly:
Unlike purely office-based engineering roles, this position requires hands-on involvement in panel assembly. The engineer will contribute to the layout, wiring, cable labelling, and testing of electrical panels, ensuring they meet high-quality standards. - Safety Compliance:
Compliance with machine safety standards is a core aspect of the role. The engineer must ensure that systems are designed and implemented with safety as a top priority, aligning with international food industry standards. - Installation & Commissioning:
The role involves providing on-site support for system installations and commissioning at client facilities worldwide. Assignments may last up to two weeks at a time, offering opportunities for international travel and exposure to different industries and cultures. - Continuous Improvement & Training:
Beyond daily responsibilities, the engineer will contribute to system improvements, participate in R&D initiatives, and engage in in-house training to further enhance their skills.
This role offers a dynamic and varied work environment where no two projects are the same. It is suited for engineers who thrive on challenges, value innovation, and are motivated by the opportunity to see their designs come to life on an international scale.
Eligibility Criteria
The ideal candidate for the Control Systems Engineer role at Wymbs Engineering should possess a balanced mix of academic knowledge, practical experience, and problem-solving ability.
Essential Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of PLC programming, preferably with Rockwell platforms such as RSLogix5000.
- Experience in motion control systems and HMI design.
- Proficiency in electrical and software design using tools such as AutoCAD and EPlan.
- Practical skills in panel assembly and wiring, including testing and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of machine safety standards relevant to automation and food industry applications.
- Educational background: HND or equivalent experience in Control Systems, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Previous experience in the food processing industry, particularly in bakery or confectionery machinery.
- Hands-on involvement in international commissioning projects.
- Familiarity with energy efficiency, sustainability, and modern food production challenges.
- Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work independently, and willingness to travel.
Personal Attributes:
- Strong communication skills to interact with international clients.
- Team-oriented mindset with a proactive approach to collaboration.
- Adaptability to manage diverse projects and customer requirements.
- Passion for continuous learning and career development.
This is not just a role for maintaining systems but an opportunity to shape innovative machinery that directly impacts food production worldwide. The company values engineers who demonstrate initiative, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.
