Company Introduction

Thar Coal Block-1 Power Generation Company (Pvt.) Ltd. is a project company under Shanghai Electric Power, a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric Group, which has spearheaded numerous energy and infrastructure projects across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. As one of the largest foreign direct investments in Pakistan’s energy sector, the Thar Coal Project signifies not only industrial development but also a long-standing partnership between China and Pakistan for mutual progress.

The Thar Block-1 Power Generation Project encompasses two 660 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants, collectively producing 1,320 MW of electricity. These units are among the most advanced in terms of efficiency and emission control, employing technologies that significantly reduce environmental impact. The plant operates on Thar’s lignite coal, mined locally through an integrated supply chain under the same project structure.

The facility employs an extensive Desulfurization and Ash Handling System (D&A System) that ensures environmental protection by reducing sulfur dioxide emissions and managing fly ash and bottom ash effectively. The systems include Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) units, Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP), and automated ash handling mechanisms. These components are crucial in meeting NEPRA and EPA environmental standards, guaranteeing clean and sustainable operations.

As part of the CPEC framework, the project symbolizes international collaboration at its finest — combining advanced Chinese engineering with Pakistan’s local workforce and resources. Job Description

The position of D&A Inspection Engineer is central to maintaining the reliability, safety, and environmental integrity of the plant’s flue gas and ash handling systems. The role requires a technically competent engineer with a deep understanding of FGD systems, ESPs, and ash handling units, along with the ability to conduct inspections, analyze performance data, and coordinate corrective actions.

As a D&A Inspection Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to conduct routine inspections and performance evaluations of the Desulfurization and Ash systems. These include visual and technical examinations of the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) system, Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP), and both dry and wet ash handling equipment. You will identify mechanical, electrical, and structural issues and work closely with maintenance teams to recommend and implement effective solutions.

You will also ensure that all inspection activities are conducted according to OEM guidelines, industry best practices, and NEPRA/EPA environmental compliance standards. This includes evaluating the operational condition of scrubbers, ducts, fans, pumps, dust collectors, and associated instrumentation. Accurate documentation and reporting are vital aspects of this role, as the engineer must prepare detailed technical reports, inspection records, and maintenance documentation to support operational transparency and regulatory audits.

The D&A Inspection Engineer will coordinate with various departments, including operations, maintenance, and safety, for shutdowns, equipment overhauls, and preventive maintenance planning. During outages, the engineer will supervise inspection activities, verify component integrity, and ensure that all maintenance work is carried out efficiently and safely.

A key expectation for this role is maintaining familiarity with the mechanical and electrical design of D&A systems. You will use diagnostic tools, vibration analyzers, and inspection methods to detect early signs of equipment degradation. By applying engineering principles, you will contribute to extending the lifespan of plant assets and minimizing unplanned downtime.

In addition to technical duties, the D&A Inspection Engineer will play an important role in training junior engineers and technicians, ensuring they understand inspection protocols, data logging procedures, and safety practices. The engineer is also expected to actively contribute to process improvement initiatives, helping to enhance reliability and optimize plant performance.

Strong communication and reporting skills are essential, as the position requires coordination with the plant’s engineering management and external consultants. You will need to clearly present findings, recommend action plans, and participate in review meetings to ensure that all corrective and preventive measures are effectively implemented.

The D&A Inspection Engineer position offers a challenging and rewarding career path within one of Pakistan’s most advanced coal-based power plants. The role provides exposure to modern power generation technologies, emission control systems, and integrated maintenance practices — making it ideal for engineers aiming to build a strong foundation in the energy industry.
