The terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art cranes, automated systems, and a committed workforce that ensures reliable, around-the-clock service to the shipping industry.

As the shipping industry grows increasingly reliant on automation and advanced control systems, Hutchison Ports is investing in people with the technical expertise to manage and improve this infrastructure. The company is known for maintaining a strong safety culture, emphasizing employee development, and encouraging a forward-thinking mindset across all departments.

Now, to support its technical team in Karachi, Hutchison Ports is hiring for the role of Snr. Maintenance / Maintenance Engineer (Automation). This is a shift-based, full-time position ideal for professionals with experience in electrical and control system maintenance, particularly in high-capacity cranes and automated machinery.

2. Job Description

The Snr. Maintenance / Maintenance Engineer (Automation) will be a key member of the technical operations team, working closely with engineering supervisors and maintenance staff to ensure the availability and efficiency of critical terminal equipment. The role requires hands-on experience in maintaining, diagnosing, and upgrading control and electrical systems in large industrial machinery—specifically container cranes, reach stackers, and automated terminal equipment.

The engineer will be responsible for supervising a team of electrical/electronic technicians and junior engineers. They will guide the team in executing routine maintenance schedules, resolving urgent equipment failures, and documenting all activity in maintenance logs. The role also includes overseeing inspections, troubleshooting faults, and performing repairs or component replacements when necessary.

The scope of work includes managing and maintaining several key systems:

  • PLC systems (Programmable Logic Controllers): Ensure seamless operation of automation logic in cranes and terminal machinery.
  • Electrical drives and communication systems: Monitor and repair any faults related to motor drives, control networks, and field communication interfaces.
  • Electric motors, sensors, and components: Evaluate performance and perform calibrations, replacements, or upgrades to ensure reliability.
  • System modifications and upgrades: Recommend and implement changes to improve system performance, reduce downtime, and enhance safety.

A crucial aspect of the role involves conducting failure analysis. When faults occur in machinery or control systems, the engineer must lead the diagnosis process, identify root causes, and propose sustainable technical solutions. In some cases, this may require reviewing original electrical schematics, consulting with OEM manuals, or analyzing event logs and communication failures.

In addition, the engineer will contribute to the development and revision of maintenance standards. Over time, equipment wear patterns and usage trends must be documented, and procedures should be revised accordingly. The role demands consistent interaction with the control room, field operators, and shift supervisors to ensure everyone is aligned on the equipment’s operating status.

Daily tasks include:

  • Supervising shift teams in executing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Ensuring all work complies with Hutchison Ports’ safety and operational protocols.
  • Performing risk assessments prior to maintenance activities.
  • Reporting daily maintenance work, equipment condition, and fault summaries to management.
  • Ensuring that cranes and related machinery are operational and safe for terminal usage.

The ideal candidate must be prepared to work in rotational shifts, including night and weekend duty. Adaptability, leadership, and a practical understanding of automation systems in port machinery are essential for success in this role.

3. Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the role of Snr. Maintenance / Maintenance Engineer (Automation), candidates must meet a combination of educational, technical, and experiential requirements.

Educational Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Electronics is required.
  • The degree should be from an HEC-recognized university.
  • Any certifications in Automation Systems, PLC Programming, or Electrical Safety will be considered a strong advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 to 6 years of professional experience in Control & Automation Engineering, ideally within industrial or port environments.
  • Experience working with cranes, material handling systems, or heavy machinery is highly preferred.
  • Experience in supervising maintenance teams, especially in shift-based environments.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in maintaining and troubleshooting electrical drives, PLC systems, and communication systems.
  • Familiarity with control systems used in cranes, RTGs, or other automated equipment.
  • Strong diagnostic skills for identifying and rectifying control and electrical failures.
  • Capability to propose and implement system modifications for operational improvement.
  • Experience in analyzing system data, generating reports, and developing equipment maintenance standards.
  • Ability to perform risk assessments, ensure job safety, and adhere to strict workplace protocols.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong supervisory skills, able to guide junior engineers and technicians.
  • Clear and effective communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage pressure, especially during equipment breakdowns or tight operational windows.
  • A proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and technical innovation.

This position is best suited for professionals who thrive in structured environments, enjoy troubleshooting complex systems, and are comfortable with hands-on supervision of equipment in real-world industrial settings.
