Job Description
The position of Maintenance Engineer Mechanical – Powerhouse at Hutchison Ports is a highly specialized role focused on ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of the company’s power generation facilities. The powerhouse is central to maintaining uninterrupted operations at the port, supplying the necessary energy to support terminal machinery, lighting systems, cranes, and other critical infrastructure. This role involves managing, maintaining, and optimizing mechanical systems that include large diesel engines, centrifugal separators, pumps, compressors, purifiers, and plant piping.
One of the primary responsibilities of this role is to perform the day-to-day operations of the power plant equipment. This includes starting up and shutting down diesel engines and auxiliary systems as per operational requirements. The engineer must ensure that these processes are carried out in strict adherence to safety protocols, preventing potential hazards and ensuring a reliable energy supply.
Routine maintenance forms a significant part of the job. The engineer will be required to independently carry out scheduled servicing of diesel engines, pumps, compressors, and purifiers. These tasks may involve replacing worn-out parts, adjusting machinery for optimal performance, and lubricating mechanical components. In addition to routine work, the Maintenance Engineer will also assist in major overhauls and repairs, which might involve dismantling large machinery, replacing core components, or conducting in-depth inspections to identify and resolve complex issues.
Monitoring and logging operating parameters is another critical task. Accurate records of pressure, temperature, flow rates, and other performance indicators must be maintained. This data is essential for diagnosing potential problems, scheduling preventive maintenance, and complying with regulatory requirements. The Maintenance Engineer will also be responsible for entering this data into the CMMS, ensuring that maintenance schedules, equipment histories, and spare parts inventories are always up to date.
Inventory management is also an important aspect of the role. The engineer will issue inventory items, maintain accurate records of spare parts usage, and coordinate with the procurement team to ensure that necessary components are available when required. This helps minimize downtime and ensures that critical repairs can be carried out without delay.
The Maintenance Engineer Mechanical – Powerhouse will also play an active role in ensuring compliance with safety procedures. Given the potential hazards of working with large machinery and high-powered diesel engines, strict adherence to safety regulations is essential. The engineer must conduct regular safety checks, report potential hazards, and participate in safety training programs.
Collaboration with other teams within Hutchison Ports is expected. The Maintenance Engineer will work closely with electrical engineers, operations teams, and safety officers to coordinate maintenance activities and resolve any technical issues that may arise. This cross-functional approach ensures that power generation and mechanical systems are fully aligned with the port’s operational needs.
The role also requires the preparation and submission of reports detailing operational data, maintenance activities, and equipment performance. These reports will be reviewed by management to guide decision-making and identify areas for improvement. By providing clear and accurate information, the Maintenance Engineer helps ensure that the powerhouse continues to operate at peak efficiency.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the role of Maintenance Engineer Mechanical – Powerhouse at Hutchison Ports, candidates must meet specific educational, professional, and technical requirements. The minimum educational qualification for this position is a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (B.E. Mechanical) from a recognized institution. The degree should have provided the candidate with a strong understanding of thermodynamics, mechanical systems, power generation principles, and maintenance engineering practices.
Professional experience is an essential requirement for this position. Candidates must have at least three years of hands-on experience in the operations and maintenance of low-speed diesel engines, preferably within a power plant environment. This experience should include exposure to both routine servicing and major overhauls, as well as the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues independently. Experience in working with centrifugal separators, pumps, compressors, purifiers, and plant piping systems is also important.
Technical skills are critical for success in this role. The candidate must be proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals. They should be capable of using precision measurement tools, performing alignments, and troubleshooting mechanical faults. Familiarity with CMMS software is required, as the position involves maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment histories, and spare parts inventories.
The role requires strong problem-solving abilities. The candidate should be able to quickly assess a mechanical problem, determine the root cause, and implement effective solutions. This may involve collaborating with other engineers, consulting technical manuals, or working under the supervision of senior maintenance staff during complex repairs.
Safety awareness is another important criterion. The candidate must have a thorough understanding of workplace safety practices, particularly when working with large diesel engines and other heavy machinery. This includes knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures, proper handling of tools and equipment, and adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
In addition to technical expertise, strong communication and teamwork skills are essential. The Maintenance Engineer must work closely with colleagues from other departments, explain technical issues clearly, and provide guidance to junior staff or apprentices. Good record-keeping skills are also important for preparing operational reports and maintaining maintenance logs.
While not mandatory, additional certifications or training in diesel engine maintenance, power plant operations, or safety management will be considered an advantage. Candidates with such qualifications may have an edge during the selection process.
