Job Offering Company Introduction

Tenaga Nasional Berhad is the largest electric utility company in Malaysia and one of the largest power companies in Southeast Asia. With assets worth billions of Malaysian Ringgit and operations that extend beyond Malaysia into several international markets, the organization has established itself as a major player in the power generation and energy services sector. Its core business revolves around electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, serving millions of customers across Peninsular Malaysia and other regions.

In Pakistan, Tenaga Nasional Berhad operates through its subsidiaries and affiliated entities to provide operation and maintenance services for large-scale power generation facilities. One of its notable areas of operation includes the 84MW New Bong Escape Hydroelectric Power Complex in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The company has also been involved in supporting combined cycle power plants, where high operational standards, safety compliance, and technical precision are critical.

The current hiring opportunity relates to operations at the 1223MW Combined Cycle Power Plant located in Balloki, Pattoki, District Kasur, Punjab, Pakistan. Combined cycle power plants are advanced facilities that use both gas turbines and steam turbines to generate electricity efficiently. In such plants, natural gas is burned in a gas turbine to produce electricity, and the waste heat from the gas turbine exhaust is used to generate steam that drives a steam turbine. This process significantly increases efficiency compared to single-cycle plants.

Operating and maintaining a facility of this scale requires experienced technical staff capable of handling complex systems. These systems include gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, condensers, cooling systems, electrical switchgear, transformers, auxiliary systems, and extensive instrumentation and control networks.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad emphasizes reliability, safety, and compliance in all its operational facilities. Power plants operate continuously, often around the clock, which means that structured shift systems and disciplined operational logging are essential. Operators are responsible for ensuring that equipment remains within specified temperature, pressure, and performance limits to avoid mechanical failures or safety hazards.

The company’s approach to plant operation includes preventive maintenance planning, condition monitoring, equipment inspections, and coordinated shutdown procedures when required. Plant personnel must work closely with control room operators, maintenance teams, and supervisors to maintain stable and uninterrupted electricity generation.

In addition to operational excellence, Tenaga Nasional Berhad focuses on environmental compliance and regulatory adherence. Power plants are subject to environmental standards that regulate emissions, water discharge, and waste management practices. Operators are expected to understand and follow these requirements as part of their daily responsibilities.

The organization maintains a professional work culture where technical discipline and teamwork are valued. Power plant operations involve coordination between mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation personnel. Clear communication between field operators and the control room is essential to maintain system stability.

The hiring for the Plant Operator position is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen its operational team at the Balloki Combined Cycle Power Plant. The role falls under the Non-Executive grade and requires individuals with technical education and relevant power plant experience.

Candidates joining the organization will work in a structured industrial environment that demands technical understanding, alertness, and commitment to safety. The plant’s size and complexity provide opportunities for operators to gain valuable experience in large-scale combined cycle operations.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s presence in multiple countries demonstrates its long-term stability and industry recognition. By hiring experienced plant operators, the company ensures that its facilities continue to operate efficiently and safely while meeting national electricity demands.

Job Description

The Plant Operator position at the 1223MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Balloki involves field-based operational responsibilities during assigned shifts. The operator works as part of a coordinated team responsible for maintaining continuous and stable plant performance.

One of the primary responsibilities is maintaining detailed logs of all field activities during shifts. Accurate logging is critical in a power plant environment. Operators must record equipment readings, operational events, system adjustments, and any irregular conditions observed in the field. These logs serve as official records and are essential for performance analysis and troubleshooting.

Coordination with control room operators is a key aspect of the role. The field operator communicates regularly with the control room to confirm equipment status, carry out isolation procedures, and execute operational instructions. Isolation of equipment is often required before maintenance activities begin. This involves mechanical isolation through valve operations or electrical isolation through circuit breakers.

Monitoring, recording, and verifying operational parameters is part of the daily routine. Combined cycle plants involve numerous temperature sensors, pressure transmitters, flow meters, and level indicators. The operator verifies readings to ensure that equipment operates within defined limits. Any deviation from expected values must be promptly reported to the control room.

Field operators are responsible for operating valves and circuit breakers when required. These actions must be executed carefully, following established procedures to prevent equipment damage or safety risks. Mechanical isolation may involve shutting off steam lines, fuel lines, or cooling systems. Electrical isolation may involve switching off feeders or isolating motor-driven equipment.

Troubleshooting is an important responsibility. When abnormal equipment behavior is observed, the field operator works with the control room to identify potential causes. This may involve checking for leaks, unusual vibrations, temperature rise, pressure fluctuations, or abnormal sounds.

Support for production optimization and quality improvement initiatives is also expected. Power plants aim to operate at optimal efficiency levels. Field operators assist by providing accurate data, reporting inefficiencies, and suggesting operational improvements based on experience.

Preventive and corrective maintenance tasks are part of the role. Preventive maintenance includes scheduled inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and minor adjustments. Corrective maintenance involves addressing faults or replacing components when issues are detected.

Compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards is mandatory. Power plants have strict safety procedures to manage high-pressure steam systems, electrical hazards, rotating equipment, and fuel handling systems. Operators must wear protective equipment and follow lockout/tagout procedures.

Reading and interpreting technical manuals, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and equipment drawings is necessary. Understanding these documents allows operators to identify system components, flow paths, and control points accurately.

The role may also require performing duties of a control room operator when assigned. This flexibility ensures continuity of operations during shift changes or temporary staffing adjustments.

Additional tasks may include assisting maintenance teams during equipment overhauls, handling tools, supporting inspections, and maintaining cleanliness in operational areas.

Shift work is expected, as power plants operate continuously. The operator must be prepared for rotating shifts, including night duties.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must possess a Diploma of Associate Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, or Mechanical discipline. This qualification provides foundational knowledge required for power plant operations.

Candidates should preferably have at least five years of experience in a combined cycle power plant environment. Experience in gas turbines, steam turbines, and heat recovery steam generators is advantageous.

A strong technical understanding of plant systems is required. Applicants should be familiar with pumps, compressors, valves, boilers, turbines, electrical switchgear, and auxiliary equipment.

Knowledge of instrumentation basics and control systems is beneficial. Understanding how field signals are transmitted to the control room supports effective troubleshooting.

Applicants must demonstrate a safety-focused mindset. Power plant operations involve high-pressure steam, high-voltage electrical systems, and rotating machinery. Safety awareness is critical.

Good communication skills are necessary. Operators must interact clearly with control room staff, supervisors, and maintenance teams.

Problem-solving and analytical skills are important for identifying abnormal equipment behavior and assisting in corrective actions.

Physical fitness is required as the role involves walking across plant areas, climbing stairs, and working in different environmental conditions.

Candidates must be disciplined, reliable, and capable of working in a team-based environment.

Experience handling preventive and corrective maintenance tasks will strengthen the application.

Ability to interpret P&IDs and equipment manuals is expected.
