Job Description

The Primary Design Engineer role at HMF Consultants involves taking ownership of HV substation design projects and providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle. This includes conceptual design, detailed layout, calculations, equipment specification, and coordination with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop primary electrical designs for substations up to 400kV, ensuring compliance with IEC standards and UK utility specifications.
  • Prepare schematic diagrams, single-line diagrams, and layout plans for HV substations and associated equipment.
  • Conduct electrical calculations, short-circuit analysis, load flow studies, and protection coordination.
  • Specify equipment, switchgear, transformers, and protection systems for HV projects.
  • Coordinate design activities with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, mechanical, and control engineers.
  • Review designs for compliance with client requirements, regulatory guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Assist in project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Participate in site visits, inspections, and commissioning activities to validate design assumptions and ensure practical feasibility.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and manuals required for project approvals, client submissions, and regulatory compliance.
