2. Job Description

The Protection Engineer will play a crucial role in the Jhimpir Wind Turbine Project by ensuring the correct functioning, configuration, and maintenance of protection relays and systems associated with wind turbine generation and grid connectivity. This includes working with major brands such as Schneider Electric and Siemens, and aligning all work with NTDC (National Transmission & Despatch Company) standards and safety protocols.

As a Protection Engineer, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Protection Relay Configuration & Testing: Handle end-to-end configuration and functional testing of protection relays, especially Schneider and Siemens types. This includes programming logic schemes, validating system responses, and documenting relay settings and system protection coordination.
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics: You will be responsible for identifying and resolving complex protection-related issues. These may include relay malfunctions, fault alarms, delayed protection response, and communication failures with SCADA or auxiliary devices.
  • Logic Programming (CFC & Relay Logic): Ability to modify or write Configurable Function Chart (CFC) logic to meet evolving project and system requirements. Experience in relay programming using vendor-specific tools is essential.
  • OCEF & MICOM Relay Expertise: Specialized knowledge of Siportech 4 & 5 MICOM relays is highly desirable. You should be confident in working with OCEF relays, including managing their associated control and auxiliary systems.
  • SCADA Integration: As protection systems now integrate directly with SCADA and remote monitoring platforms, a firm grasp of SCADA communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, etc.) is necessary. You will also coordinate with SCADA engineers for seamless data flow between the protection system and monitoring interfaces.
  • Firmware Upgrades and Commissioning: You will be responsible for maintaining the latest firmware on all protection devices, performing testing before and after upgrades, and ensuring all devices pass compliance checks.
  • Event Analysis and Fault Logs: A vital part of your role will be interpreting event logs, oscillography, and alarms to determine the root causes of system failures and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Relay Coordination and Selectivity Studies: Conduct protection coordination studies in collaboration with power system engineers to ensure selective tripping and system stability. All studies should align with NTDC specifications and grid code requirements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of relay settings, modifications, commissioning reports, and failure analysis reports. These will be used for audits and project close-out documentation.
  • Team Collaboration: As part of a larger EPC team, you’ll collaborate with electrical engineers, SCADA engineers, construction teams, and O&M staff to ensure synchronization of work schedules and protection system readiness.

This role demands attention to detail, technical precision, and the ability to work independently in a challenging and remote project environment. We are looking for someone who not only understands protection systems but also brings a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous system improvement.

3. Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the position of Protection Engineer, candidates must meet the following qualifications and experience criteria:

Educational Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (B.E. or B.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or Electronics Engineering from a recognized and accredited university.
  • Additional certifications in SCADA system operation & integration are strongly preferred.

Technical Experience & Skills:

  • Hands-on Experience with Schneider Electric and Siemens protection relays is mandatory. This includes relay configuration, parameter setting, and functional testing.
  • Must possess working knowledge of Siportech 4 & 5 MICOM relays, with demonstrable experience in troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Solid understanding of OCEF relays and ability to interpret control diagrams and auxiliary system wiring.
  • Proficient in CFC programming, logic editing, and modifying protection schemes based on system performance data.
  • Knowledge of NTDC guidelines and experience implementing protection systems aligned with Pakistani national grid codes.
  • Experience working on wind farm, transmission, or power plant projects will be considered a strong advantage.
  • Capable of independently conducting firmware updates, relay coordination, and commissioning activities.
  • Knowledge of SCADA protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus, and TCP/IP, and experience integrating protection relays into SCADA networks.
  • Familiarity with telecommunication protocols and network configuration for real-time data transmission and monitoring.
  • Experience interpreting relay fault logs, waveform captures, and event reports to determine causes and prevent future faults.

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to convey technical findings and collaborate with internal and external teams.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to work under pressure in field environments.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines without supervision.
  • Willingness to be stationed full-time at a remote wind farm site and travel occasionally for corporate training or meetings.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Urdu and local languages will be helpful in field coordination.

Certifications (Preferred):

  • SCADA System Integration Certification
  • NTDC-approved Engineer Registration (if available)
  • Relay Testing & Commissioning Training (vendor-based preferred)

Only those candidates who meet both educational and technical qualifications should apply. Due to the technical complexity of the role, priority will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in power system protection within a wind energy or grid-connected environment.

4. Job Location

The position is based at the Jhimpir Wind Turbine Project site, located in Jhimpir, District Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan. Jhimpir is a designated wind energy corridor approximately 100 kilometers from Karachi, known for its high wind potential and concentration of renewable energy projects.

5. Application Deadline
