Job Description
The position of SCADA / Substation Automation Engineer at Petrozone International is a technical role that requires a deep understanding of SCADA systems, substation automation processes, and communication protocols used in modern power systems. This role involves working on both in-house system configuration and on-site commissioning, ensuring that complex automation projects are executed successfully from design to final handover.
As a SCADA / SAS Engineer, the selected candidate will be involved in the engineering, configuration, integration, and commissioning of SCADA and substation automation systems. Projects will typically include Copa Data Zenon SCADA platforms, SICAM PAS systems, IEC 61850 protocol implementation, and related substation communication infrastructures. The work requires close interaction with project managers, design engineers, field technicians, and client representatives to ensure all project requirements are met within budget, scope, and timeline.
Key responsibilities include designing SCADA/SAS system architectures, developing configuration files, setting up communication gateways, and integrating IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) into the system. This will also involve configuring GPS clocks, Ethernet switches, and other network components necessary for proper system operation. The engineer will conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), ensuring that all functions are operating as specified and that any issues are promptly resolved.
Troubleshooting forms a critical part of the role. The SCADA / SAS Engineer will be expected to diagnose communication errors, verify protocol mappings (such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850), and resolve system integration challenges. The ability to identify problems quickly and implement effective solutions is essential, especially during site commissioning where timelines can be tight.
This role also requires preparing technical documentation, including system design reports, configuration manuals, FAT/SAT procedures, and as-built drawings. Attention to detail in documentation ensures that both Petrozone International and its clients have a complete and accurate record of the system as implemented.
The SCADA / SAS Engineer will need to keep up to date with the latest developments in SCADA software, communication protocols, and substation automation standards. This ensures that solutions provided to clients are in line with industry best practices and technological advancements. The engineer will also have opportunities to contribute to internal training sessions, helping to build the capabilities of the wider engineering team.
Given the nature of Petrozone International’s projects, the position may require travel to client sites within Saudi Arabia and occasionally to other locations in the Gulf region. Site work can involve extended hours, particularly during commissioning phases, and the engineer must be prepared to work under these conditions while maintaining high professional standards.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the SCADA / Substation Automation Engineer position at Petrozone International, candidates must meet a set of educational, technical, and professional requirements designed to ensure they are fully capable of handling the demands of the role. Given the complexity of SCADA and substation automation systems, the position requires both a strong academic foundation and significant hands-on experience in relevant technologies.
Applicants should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized university. A master’s degree in a relevant field will be considered an advantage, especially if it includes coursework or research related to automation, control systems, or power system protection. Membership in professional bodies such as the Saudi Council of Engineers or IEEE can also be beneficial, as it demonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional development.
From a technical skills perspective, candidates must have at least five years of direct experience working on SCADA and Substation Automation Systems (SAS) projects. This experience should include hands-on work with Copa Data Zenon SCADA platforms and SICAM PAS systems, as these are core technologies used in Petrozone International’s projects. Applicants must also demonstrate familiarity with IEC 61850 standards, including GOOSE and MMS protocols, which are central to modern substation communication and interoperability.
Experience in configuring and testing communication protocols such as Modbus and DNP3 is also essential. Candidates should be able to integrate Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) into a substation environment, configure GPS clocks for time synchronization, and set up network equipment such as gateways and Ethernet switches. Knowledge of protocol analyzers and diagnostic tools is valuable, as troubleshooting is a key part of the role.
Practical experience in conducting Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) is required. The ideal candidate will have successfully led or participated in multiple FAT/SAT sessions, ensuring that systems met all client specifications before being approved for operational use. This includes the ability to prepare test plans, execute tests, document results, and address any discrepancies identified during the process.
Strong problem-solving skills are essential, particularly in the high-pressure environment of site commissioning. The SCADA / SAS Engineer should be able to quickly identify issues, analyze root causes, and implement solutions that restore functionality without compromising system performance or safety.
Beyond technical expertise, the role demands excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. The engineer will be working closely with project teams, client representatives, and equipment vendors, so the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and professionally is important. This extends to preparing detailed technical documentation, such as design reports, configuration manuals, and as-built documentation, which must be accurate, clear, and complete.
Time management and organizational skills are also critical. SCADA/SAS projects often involve multiple simultaneous activities, tight deadlines, and coordination between various stakeholders. The engineer must be able to manage their workload effectively, prioritize tasks, and ensure that project milestones are met without delays.
Familiarity with industry safety standards and procedures is another requirement. Candidates should have knowledge of workplace safety regulations and practices, especially those relevant to substation environments, where high-voltage equipment and live systems are common. Adherence to safety protocols is non-negotiable, and the engineer must consistently work in a manner that protects both personnel and equipment.
The position also demands flexibility and willingness to travel. While the main base of operations is in Khobar, the engineer will be expected to work on client sites across Saudi Arabia and potentially in other Gulf countries. This may involve extended periods away from the home office, especially during commissioning phases, and the candidate must be prepared for such assignments.
Finally, while the focus is on technical competence, Petrozone International values individuals who bring a proactive and collaborative approach to their work. The successful candidate should be able to work independently when required, but also thrive in a team setting, contributing ideas, sharing knowledge, and supporting colleagues to achieve collective goals.
