Job Offering Company Introduction
MAK Power is a specialist engineering consultancy founded by a team of highly experienced UK-based power engineers. Since its establishment, MAK Power has rapidly built a strong reputation in substation design, protection engineering, and power system consultancy, serving both international and national power sector projects.
The company focuses on delivering tailored engineering solutions rather than generic designs. Every project undertaken by MAK Power is treated as unique, with consulting services customized to meet the specific technical, operational, and regulatory needs of each client. This approach has enabled the organization to support utilities, transmission companies, developers, and industrial clients across a diverse range of power infrastructure projects.
MAK Power provides comprehensive services covering HV and MV substation design, system studies, protection and control engineering, SCADA integration, and power system consultancy. The company works across the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed engineering through testing, commissioning, and energization.
With strong expertise in international standards and best practices, MAK Power delivers solutions aligned with IEC, ENA, and utility/DNO requirements. As part of its ongoing growth and project expansion in Pakistan, MAK Power is now hiring a Secondary Design Engineer for its Karachi-based operations.
Job Description
The Secondary Design Engineer will play a key role in the engineering, integration, and delivery of protection, control, SCADA, and automation systems for HV and MV substations. This position involves working closely with lead engineers, project managers, primary engineers, CAD teams, and clients throughout the entire project lifecycle.
The role requires responsibility for preparing detailed secondary design deliverables, including wiring diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, and panel layouts. The engineer will ensure that all secondary systems are engineered accurately and integrated seamlessly with primary equipment and site requirements.
The Secondary Design Engineer will be involved in the specification, configuration, and testing of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), protection relays, and communication systems. Exposure to modern substation automation architectures and digital substations will be a valuable part of this role.
Support during Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning activities is an essential responsibility. The engineer will assist in troubleshooting, verification, and energization of secondary systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
The role also includes contributing to technical documentation, risk assessments, and engineering reports while ensuring full compliance with project specifications, international standards, and regulatory requirements. Occasional travel for site-based support and commissioning activities may be required.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements.
Applicants must hold a BSc or MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related discipline.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of practical experience in secondary systems engineering for HV and MV substations, with a strong focus on protection and control systems.
Applicants must have a solid understanding of IEC and ENA standards, as well as utility, DNO, and transmission-level engineering practices. Familiarity with standards such as IEC 61850 and IEC 60255 is essential.
Hands-on experience with protection relays and IEDs from manufacturers such as Siemens, ABB, GE, and SEL is required.
Candidates should be comfortable working with CAD and engineering tools such as AutoCAD, DigSILENT, or equivalent platforms used in substation design.
Strong technical documentation and communication skills in English are essential for this role.
Applicants should demonstrate a proactive mindset, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Willingness to travel for site visits, testing, and commissioning support is required.
