Job Description
NCPL is seeking a qualified Shift Engineer to operate and manage plant operations at its Lahore facility. The role requires experience in power generation, particularly in managing engines, boilers, steam turbines, and auxiliary systems. The Shift Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the plant.
Key responsibilities include monitoring and controlling plant parameters such as steam pressure, fuel consumption, turbine performance, and auxiliary equipment output. The engineer will operate Wartsila HFO DGs, separators (HFO & LO), pumps, and switchyard systems. Troubleshooting and preventive maintenance tasks are essential to minimize unplanned downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
The Shift Engineer is responsible for operating the plant control systems, including DCS/SCADA platforms, ensuring all operations follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and company policies. Daily reporting responsibilities include generating shift logs, event reports, and operational records to track performance indicators and regulatory compliance.
Supervision of shift staff and coordination with maintenance teams is an integral part of the role. The engineer ensures the smooth execution of start-up and shutdown procedures, immediately responding to emergencies or abnormal conditions. Critical decision-making skills are required to handle unexpected plant events while maintaining safety and operational continuity.
This position demands a thorough understanding of power plant systems and components, including boiler operations, HRSG, turbines, auxiliary systems, and fuel management systems. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to analyze performance data, identify deviations, and implement corrective actions.
Shift Engineers must ensure compliance with environmental standards, safety protocols, and internal operational guidelines. They participate in root cause analysis for incidents and contribute to process improvements. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, including operations, maintenance, and engineering, to meet plant targets and optimize performance.
Technical expertise in Wartsila engines and HFO DGs is highly valued. The engineer should be capable of performing troubleshooting, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance tasks efficiently. Knowledge of power distribution systems, pump operations, and switchyard procedures is essential.
The Shift Engineer is also expected to actively monitor quality, health, safety, and environmental (QHSE) standards. Maintaining operational logs, shift reports, and documentation ensures compliance with regulatory authorities and internal auditing processes.
This role is critical for maintaining operational continuity, optimizing plant efficiency, and supporting the company’s commitment to safe, sustainable, and reliable energy generation. Engineers in this position contribute directly to meeting energy demand, minimizing downtime, and improving plant reliability and performance.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for the Shift Engineer position must meet specific educational and professional requirements.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Power Engineering-Tech (Mechanical). Candidates with specific experience in Wartsila engines or similar HFO DG operations are preferred.
A minimum of 5–6 years of professional experience in a power plant environment is required. Within this period, at least 3 years should have been spent in a Shift Engineer capacity managing plant operations. Experience in controlling boilers, HRSGs, steam turbines, auxiliary systems, and power generation equipment is mandatory.
Candidates must demonstrate strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. The ability to quickly identify faults, implement solutions, and prevent operational delays is critical. Leadership skills are required to supervise shift teams and coordinate maintenance and operations activities effectively.
Familiarity with control systems, DCS/SCADA platforms, and digital reporting tools such as the SDXP portal is expected. Engineers should be able to monitor plant performance, track fuel consumption, and adjust operational parameters to meet production targets efficiently.
Strong communication and reporting skills are essential for documenting shift operations, preparing daily reports, and interacting with management. Candidates must be able to clearly explain operational issues, technical findings, and corrective measures.
A commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards (QHSE) is mandatory. Engineers must follow SOPs, enforce safety protocols, and contribute to creating a safe working environment for all plant personnel.
Candidates should have the willingness and flexibility to work in rotating shifts to ensure 24/7 operational continuity. This includes being able to respond promptly to emergencies or abnormal plant conditions.
Analytical skills are important for interpreting operational data, identifying trends, and recommending improvements. Candidates must be able to make informed decisions to enhance plant performance and minimize fuel costs.
A proactive, disciplined, and detail-oriented approach is expected from all applicants. Experience in a regulated, industrial environment with strict adherence to operational standards is highly valued.
