Job Description

The position of Shift Engineer / Assistant Manager Process Operations at Hunza Sugar Mills Pvt. Ltd. offers a hands-on leadership role within the company’s high-capacity distillery unit. This role is central to ensuring smooth and efficient process operations across the entire production shift. As part of a core operations team, the selected candidate will be expected to manage all technical aspects of process activities and coordinate cross-functionally to maintain output quality and operational reliability.

The primary responsibility of the role is to supervise distillery operations during assigned shifts, ensuring that processes align with defined productivity, quality, and safety benchmarks. This includes monitoring key process parameters, identifying anomalies, taking corrective actions, and ensuring that all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed rigorously by the operations crew.

Candidates will be expected to bring a clear understanding of fermentation, distillation, and chemical recovery systems. The role includes oversight of key equipment such as distillation columns, boilers, evaporators, condensers, and pumps. A good understanding of mass balance, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics as applied in a distillery setup is critical for succeeding in this role.

Other duties include coordinating with the maintenance team to ensure timely preventive maintenance of process equipment and responding swiftly to breakdowns or faults that could compromise production targets. The Shift Engineer / Assistant Manager will be required to log production reports, analyze performance data, and submit shift-wise updates to senior management.

In this role, the candidate will also oversee quality assurance tasks in collaboration with the QA team. This includes ensuring the accuracy of product specifications and implementing in-process checks to avoid deviations. Special focus is placed on minimizing wastage, optimizing raw material usage, and enhancing the plant’s energy efficiency.

A strong aspect of the position involves managing the human resource assigned during the shift. This includes guiding technicians and operators, assigning responsibilities, and ensuring safety compliance at all times. As a line supervisor, the Shift Engineer / Assistant Manager will be expected to set the tone for discipline, teamwork, and proactive problem-solving.

This role demands excellent technical documentation, report writing, and communication skills. Candidates will be required to maintain detailed operational logs, production summaries, and incident reports. Familiarity with ISO standards, occupational health and safety practices, and production KPIs is also desirable.

The person in this role will also be engaged in continuous improvement initiatives and will be expected to contribute ideas for process enhancement, cost savings, and quality improvements. The ideal candidate is one who can lead by example, think analytically, and contribute positively to plant operations.

Overall, this is not a desk job. It involves active on-ground presence, interaction with control room staff, line operators, and support teams. Candidates should be willing to work rotational shifts and must be capable of managing pressure while upholding standards of professionalism and accountability.

In terms of experience, the candidate must have at least 5 years of relevant work experience in a chemical processing industry such as a distillery, petrochemical plant, or oil and gas processing unit. Prior experience working in ethanol production, fermentation systems, or similar distillation processes is highly preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate strong technical knowledge of process engineering principles and must be familiar with industrial equipment used in distillation, heat exchange, and process automation. Understanding of control systems like SCADA or DCS, familiarity with process instrumentation, and the ability to read and interpret P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) are highly desirable.

The ideal candidate should possess practical problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to troubleshooting. Experience in leading shift teams, managing operators, and collaborating with maintenance, electrical, and quality departments is essential.

Sound knowledge of health, safety, and environment (HSE) practices applicable to process industries is expected. Applicants must understand emergency protocols, be familiar with safe handling of chemicals, and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining workplace safety.

Computer literacy is essential. The candidate must be proficient in MS Office applications, especially Excel for data recording and report generation. Knowledge of maintenance and production management software (like SAP, Oracle, or ERP-based systems) will be considered an added advantage.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important. The role requires coordination with internal departments and reporting to senior management. Candidates should be fluent in technical English and be able to write reports and communicate instructions clearly.

Time management and the ability to prioritize tasks under pressure is also necessary. The ideal candidate should have experience working in rotating shifts and handling shift transitions professionally.

Candidates must be physically fit, given the demands of the job, which involve frequent site movement, standing for extended periods, and responding to on-ground operational needs.
