Now Hiring: Trainee Engineer (MTO) at Hutchison Ports Pakistan – Karachi

1. Company Introduction

Hutchison Ports Pakistan is a subsidiary of Hutchison Ports, the world-renowned port investor, developer, and operator with a network that spans across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Australasia. The company has over 30,000 employees and handles more than 80 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containerized cargo annually.

In Pakistan, Hutchison Ports operates state-of-the-art port infrastructure and container terminals that are essential to the country’s maritime and trade logistics. Our terminal in Karachi—Pakistan Deep Water Container Port (PDWCP)—is one of the most technologically advanced terminals in South Asia. It offers deep-water access, efficient cargo handling systems, and cutting-edge automation tools that significantly reduce turnaround time and operational costs.

We take pride in our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and safety. Our engineering teams are responsible for maintaining and optimizing the terminal’s vast infrastructure, from cranes and conveyors to control systems and energy networks.

At Hutchison Ports, people are our biggest asset. Our training programs are built to prepare young engineers for long-term roles in port operations, equipment maintenance, and engineering leadership. Through our Trainee Engineer (MTO) program, we aim to identify high-potential graduates who are ready to begin their journey in the logistics and maritime industry with practical, hands-on experience and expert mentorship.

2. Job Description

We are inviting applications for the position of Trainee Engineer (MTO) at our Karachi terminal. This is a full-time, entry-level role within the Engineering Department, designed for fresh graduates or those with up to one year of experience.

The Management Trainee Officer (MTO) program offers real-time exposure to port engineering systems, including maintenance planning, repair protocols, control systems, and equipment calibration. Trainees will receive structured assignments, mentorship, and regular performance feedback throughout the program.

This role is ideal for candidates who want to build their career in industrial automation, electronics, heavy equipment maintenance, and maritime engineering operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior engineers in routine maintenance, repair, and inspection tasks across terminal equipment
  • Learn and contribute to preventive maintenance schedules for cranes, generators, RTGs, STS, and conveyor systems
  • Support the development and review of engineering documentation including standard operating procedures (SOPs), equipment logs, and incident reports
  • Participate in technical troubleshooting and diagnostics of equipment malfunctions
  • Get hands-on training in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), control panels, and electronic circuits used in port operations
  • Coordinate with vendors and support staff to ensure uninterrupted operations and compliance with safety standards
  • Engage in regular learning sessions covering port operations, electrical systems, and automation software
  • Contribute to energy efficiency and cost-saving initiatives by providing analytical support

This is not a desk-bound role. You’ll spend a considerable amount of time in operational areas, observing, learning, and assisting in real-time technical challenges.

Training Structure:

  • Duration: 6 to 12 months (based on performance and department needs)
  • Rotation: Exposure to various areas of the Engineering Department
  • Mentorship: Assigned supervisors for regular evaluations
  • Post-Training Placement: Based on performance, trainees may be offered permanent roles in the engineering or operations teams

This role offers a strong foundation for engineers aiming to build a career in industrial port systems, smart maintenance, and automation engineering.
