Job Description – 1200 Words
The Utilities Engineer position at Arma Soap & Chemicals is a full-time, on-site role located at the company’s main manufacturing facility in the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone. The role is part of the Engineering and Maintenance Department, specifically under the Utilities function, which is critical to the plant’s smooth and uninterrupted operations.
The core responsibility of the Utilities Engineer is to implement and oversee preventive and periodic maintenance plans for all machines and equipment related to the facility’s utilities and services. This includes, but is not limited to, steam boilers, air compressors, water treatment systems, cooling towers, HVAC systems, and fire suppression equipment. The objective is to ensure that all utility systems are available, reliable, and running at optimal efficiency.
The engineer will begin by working with the department manager to understand the plant’s utility network, capacity constraints, maintenance logs, and existing equipment manuals. Using this data, the engineer will help plan and schedule maintenance routines—both preventive and predictive. These plans need to be developed with attention to detail, machine manufacturer recommendations, plant production schedules, and energy efficiency considerations.
Once plans are approved, the Utilities Engineer will supervise their execution on the ground. This includes assigning tasks to technicians, coordinating resources, and verifying that maintenance activities are conducted safely and accurately. The engineer will be required to monitor progress, document findings, and ensure that maintenance activities are properly logged in the system.
One of the ongoing tasks for the Utilities Engineer is to physically monitor all utility-related infrastructure. This means walking the plant daily, checking parameters on control panels, inspecting valves and pumps, and ensuring that equipment is operating without abnormal vibrations, noise, or leakages. If irregularities are detected, the engineer must take immediate corrective action and coordinate repairs with the relevant teams.
Another aspect of the role involves troubleshooting and responding to unexpected breakdowns. When utility systems face performance issues—such as pressure drops, temperature deviations, or equipment alarms—the Utilities Engineer must investigate the root cause and implement corrective actions. This often involves working with equipment manuals, interpreting performance data, and coordinating with technicians to restore functionality.
The engineer will also play a role in developing spare parts lists, maintaining technical documentation, and ensuring compliance with internal and external audit standards. All maintenance work must align with the company’s safety protocols and environmental guidelines. The Utilities Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that work areas are safe, confined space entry protocols are followed, and electrical isolation procedures are correctly applied.
Additionally, the Utilities Engineer will participate in department meetings, suggest improvements to reduce energy consumption, and identify opportunities for automation and system upgrades. They may also be assigned to special projects, such as commissioning new equipment or expanding plant capacity. Participation in cross-functional improvement teams—such as energy management or Lean Manufacturing initiatives—is encouraged.
Reporting directly to the Head of Utilities or Engineering Manager, the engineer will receive support in the form of technical training, coaching, and access to tools and documentation. Over time, they are expected to take ownership of assigned systems and contribute to continuous improvement.
This role offers a steep learning curve and hands-on experience with industrial utilities in a structured and safety-conscious environment. It provides strong exposure to mechanical systems, process reliability, and operational excellence within one of Egypt’s leading FMCG plants.
Eligibility Criteria – 1200 Words
The Utilities Engineer role at Arma Soap & Chemicals is open to early-career mechanical engineers who are passionate about industrial operations and utility systems. The company is looking for candidates who are both technically sound and operationally reliable, with the right mindset to thrive in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
The minimum educational requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution. Preference will be given to graduates who have completed coursework or final year projects in thermal systems, energy engineering, fluid mechanics, industrial maintenance, or HVAC design. A solid academic record and a hands-on approach to problem-solving are key attributes the company is looking for.
Experience-wise, candidates must have 1 to 3 years of relevant work experience in utilities within a manufacturing environment. This includes exposure to systems such as boilers, chillers, water pumps, compressors, or HVAC equipment. Internships or training in industrial facilities, if supplemented with good recommendations or proven skills, may also be considered.
A manufacturing background is mandatory. The company expects applicants to have experience in or understanding of how production processes depend on utilities and how equipment reliability affects operational targets. Candidates without this experience are unlikely to be considered for this role.
Technical skills should include:
- Knowledge of mechanical systems such as centrifugal pumps, reciprocating compressors, valves, and pressure vessels.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment datasheets, maintenance manuals, and utility flow diagrams.
- Basic understanding of control systems, safety instrumentation, and standard operating procedures related to utilities.
- Comfort working with maintenance software or at least well-developed spreadsheet reporting skills.
In addition to technical skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is expected. Candidates should be able to maintain accurate maintenance records, prepare presentations, and support reporting tasks for audits and management reviews.
Candidates must be residents of Cairo or Sharkia, or willing to relocate to the 10th of Ramadan industrial area. Proximity to the site is important due to shift patterns, emergency duties, and coordination requirements.
Personal attributes are equally important. The company seeks individuals who:
- Can work independently and show initiative in solving problems
- Demonstrate personal accountability and reliability in performing maintenance activities
- Communicate effectively with technicians, supervisors, and vendors
- Are detail-oriented and capable of identifying early warning signs in equipment
- Follow safety and maintenance protocols strictly without shortcuts
A commitment to continuous learning is also essential. Engineers who invest in improving their skills—either through self-study or training—will find support from Arma in terms of mentorship, training programs, and performance reviews.
Candidates must also align with Arma’s safety and ethical standards. The Utilities department operates under high-risk conditions involving pressure systems, rotating machinery, and hot surfaces. The engineer must be disciplined in following procedures and ensuring safety for self and others.
The company is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from qualified candidates without discrimination.
